Of course, nobody ever has favorites among their children – but among the very most favorite of my offspring is my phono pre amp based on the infamous EAR 834P topology, for which a great chinese PCB has been available for many years. When combined with good parts, only one thing is missing for complete and utter bliss: A good power supply. Preamplifiers live and die by their power supplies, they are the alpha and omega. What the maker of the PCB must have thought of his own solution for this crucical part is perfectly expressed through the perforation in the board, which makes it easy for the destrudo driven hifi maniac to just break off the corpus delicti and cast it into oblivion, so as to finally have clean power pulsing through the hallowed circuit.
I had already told the story of this undertaking in far too great detail and colorfulness, how I constued a new power supply and made all the resources available, so that everyone could easily recreate the effort. In the context of upgrades in the setups of my friends I re-opened the project and put together desperately needed updates. Most importantly, I had a Gerber file made from the embarrassingly insufficient pictures, so that everybody can simply order them from one of the countless chinese PCB makers for a few bucks. Further, I have made a Mouser Cart, so you can order everything you need for great rectification, save the transformer. Gone the time of searching – now it’s all there within the reach of only a click of a button.
Here’s the corrected schematic:
